Personal Auto Policy:

The Personal Auto Policy (PAP) is the most common types of auto insurance policy under which the insured is covered for physical damage, personal liability, uninsured or underinsured motorist protection, medical expenses in case if there is any accident.

The personal auto policy covers only the personal vehicles and not the recreational vehicles. It also provides coverage for vans and pickup vehicles that weigh less than 10,000 pounds. However, this coverage is provided only if these vehicles are used for maintaining or repairing equipment of furnishings and not for any kind of business delivery.

Let us look at what types of coverage you get under the personal auto policy

  • Liability coverage:

    • Under this coverage, you are paid for liabilities and damages and for defense costs.

  • Coverage for medical payments:

    • Under this coverage, funeral expenses are also provided in a no-fault payment. It provides payment for injuries even if the insured is not driving the car, is a passenger, is simply walking, or is using the public transportation.

  • Uninsured motorists’ coverage:

    • Majority of states in the United States require drivers to have a minimum amount of coverage. However, majority of drivers drive sans any kind of coverage. Thus, under this type of coverage you are provided with payments to damages suffered from drivers who are uninsured or contain coverage that is less than the required minimum expenses. This type of coverage also covers you in case of there is any hit-and-run case.

    One important thing to note is personal auto policy does not cover the underinsured motorists. Thus, if someone having an insurance coverage less than the damages occurred to you than you will not get anything more than the coverage the person has.

Apart from these, there are also some general provisions that come with personal auto policy. The key lies in getting a policy that is a bit higher than the amount stipulated by the state as who knows what kind of crisis you will have to go through.
